"... He [Rite Aid manager] stated that it wasn't pornography. I said "Yes. It is." I said it may not be illegal - obscene - but, indeed, it is pornography."
From yesterday's email alert:
"I'm going to take a stand against SI Swimsuit Edition at our local
Rite Aid today...

This example has application for you in your community with your store that sells SI Swimsuit --
Here's what happened --
(1) I asked for the manager. I told him that my family had prescriptions with Rite Aid for years and that we had been happy. I pulled out a prescription bottle.
(2) I told him that I was coming in because I was unhappy that Rite Aid was selling the pornographic Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.
He stated that it wasn't pornography. I said "Yes. It is." I said it may not be illegal - obscene - but, indeed, it is pornography."
He stated that it was a corporate decision and there was nothing he could do as manager; that there was a contract with Sports Illustrated. I said years ago Rite Aid rented over 100 X-rated videos in this store and others and that through the efforts of ourselves and others, Rite Aid stopped renting that trash.
He stated that if that were the case today he wouldn't work for them. I said good for you, but you are selling pornography in your store and if you don't stop, I will pull my prescriptions very soon.
(3) I told him that if the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit was not gone by this coming Monday I would pull my prescriptions, and that
(4) I would begin circulating a petition urging others to the same.
(5) I made it clear that my concern was with his store and with the entire corporation - nationwide.
He asked for my phone number and stated that he would give it to his district manager and that his district manager would call me.
I thanked him and left the store. At this hour (11:00 am - Thursday), I have not heard from Rite Aid.
I will check Rite Aid on Monday and if it isn't gone, I will do what I said. I will pull my prescriptions from Rite Aid and I will develop and circulate a petition. Rite Aid will bank on me fading away and forgetting, but I won't. Will I be successful? I don't know. But, with God's help, this I know I will be faithful. Perhaps many of you don't have a Rite Aid in your community, but some of you do. I anticipate having a Rite Aid petition next week. I'll ask for help then.
In the meantime, you can express your thoughts to Rite Aid at:

Here's what a few others are saying:
Letter 1: Walmart and SI Swimsuit? Are they not selling it?
Hi Bill,
Last year I asked that the SI Swimsuit Edition be removed from the magazine section at my local Walmart store. They were removed promptly while I watched. I looked for them yesterday - did not find them, so I asked a Walmart employee and was told they were not stocking them this year, but had another Sports Illustrated magazine on an end - cap - the magazine was about sports!! not sex. Halllelujah! I told the Walmart employee that I was part of a national organization regarding decency...etc., etc., and
that we were to report back to the "national headquarters" and give a report about our local Walmart - I got an eyebrow raised anyway about that. It's like "we are watching you"......Thanks for standing firm.
Blessings, Cindy
Letter #2: We need to speak up. It's way past time
Thank you for this article! When I see someone who looks like a manager in a store I register a complaint about the magazines. There are numerous ones, including Sports Illustrated that are pornographic, as far as I'm
concerned. We all need to speak up and quit turning our heads! It's way PAST time.
A concerned mom and grandma,
N.W.
Letter #3: The word slut
The word slut is a standard dictionary word and is not slang, profanity or dirty. It is a perfect description for the magazine. ...
P.S.
Letter #4: Speaking up - another shopper at Rite Aid
As a matter of fact, I was at Rite Aid today. While at the counter paying, I noticed the SI issue staring right at me. I was taken aback. But, of course, I did not think about saying anything. I have the feeling most people think it is harmless.
After reading about your action....next time I will speak up.
S.K.
Letter #5: SI Swimsuit is "slut"
Sometimes it offends people to call things what they really are. Sports Illustrated (especially the Swimsuit Edition) is "slut." The word slut may offend, but how much more should the magazine?
Keep looking up,
A.H.
Letter #6: Speaking up at Genuardi's
Dear Mr. Johnson,
FYI, I saw the Swim Suit Edition right in the aisle as you walk into Genuardi's. I promptly spoke with the manager and politely and firmly said that this was not acceptable in a family environment. . He agreed and was quite apologetic and promptly removed the display and for the life of my I can't find it anywhere. I am in the store several times a week and haven't seen it since. They are very open to these kind of comments. They also cover all the Cosmopolitans. Last year I went to ACME and they removed the S.I edition. I haven't been there yet, but will take a look this week. I have never been met with any opposition from a supermarket yet after a complaint. People just need to speak up! Thanks for you good work!
