Orioles decline Mora's 2010 option By Jeff Zrebiec jeff.zrebiec@baltsun.com 7:05 p.m. EDT, October 29, 2009 The Orioles announced Thursday that they won't exercise third baseman Melvin Mora's $8 million contract option for the 2010 season, an expected move that will likely end the tenure of one of their most productive and popular players over the last decade. The Orioles could attempt to re-sign Mora at a lesser rate, but that is extremely unlikely with the veteran third baseman coming off one of the worst offensive campaigns of his career and both sides seemingly ready to head in different directions. "We'll see how the offseason unfolds," president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said. "There are a lot of twists and turns. You never say never." ... "I always talk to my wife about the Orioles even after the season ended," said Mora in a phone interview with The Baltimore Sun from his native Venezuela. "We were just talking about how I had a great career here and I'm thinking I'm going to die an Oriole. That was the reason I signed a long-term contract, because I wanted to die an Oriole." I've always been and will always be a fan of Melmo. He was a true grinder and gave his all for this franchise. He's been a unique member of the community and in an era of free agency and mercenaries, he wanted to be here. He wanted to win here.
Mora was never an extraordinarily gifted athlete or a prize in any team's system. His versatility kept him around long enough to develop into an All Star. I don't know if he'll get any offers this winter, but I hope he does something with the organization in the future.

I love Melvin too, he had some good years and gave it his all. But it was apparent that he lost a little something at the plate. I am hoping Josh Bell gets his shot at 3rd, or Scott Moore(I don't know what his situation is).

Thanks for your service, Melvin!
Anyone have any idea what our lineup and rotation may look like next season? How about free agents we may pursue? |

Nah, let him go. Too old. Out with the old and in with the new.
