The problem is that we're already set in the OF with Kakes, Jones, Rei and Pie.

Scott is probably going to continue the DH unless we flip him for a solid #3 type starter.

We need to upgrade at 3B, 1B and SS offensively.

The only two set in stone are Kakes and Jones. Those other guys shouldn't be promised anything.

I think Dye would be a downgrade in LF to Reimold.

He'll be 36, cost 6-9 million bucks. His OPS last year was under .800 last year. He'll also probably be a type B free agent and cost the O's a draft pick to sign.

Reimold will be 26, cost 445K and his OPS will be better than the .831 he put up in 09. Bill James thinks his OPS will be the best on the team next year!

Let the kids play and get experience. Seriously, the best we'll do is 4th place next year. I'm looking forward to 2011. We have to undo 8 years of crap from 1999-2007. These guys have to have time to develop. No trading arms for bats. Let the pitchers develop and bring in a big bat for 2011 when we're ready to contend for the wild card.

I applaud your patience, pj. You've been saying the same thing for a good two years now. You are the voice of reason in a fanbase that is desperate to win.

I think we are closer than you think though. I don't see us being dramatically better in 2011 than we will be next year. Is one more year going to make Tillman, Arrieta, Erbe, Snyder, Bell, Matsuz, Wieters etc. that much better?(I admit that possibility exists) Markakis is in his prime. Roberts has like 2 more years left. I just think we could sign a power bat and a quality arm and maybe contend next year. But maybe that is just wishful thinking, which is all an O's fan can do really.

The O's scored 741 runs this year. To be .500 or better, we need to score at LEAST 825 runs. The good news is that most of our current lineup will likely produce more runs in '10. Roberts, Jones and Scott staying the same, but Wieters is a dramatic improvement over Zaun/Moeller, you get a full year out of Reimold, and Kakes will have better year without Huff killing him behind him! Also Snyder right now is probably better than Huff's .725 OPS last year.

So let's say they get to 825 runs.

Last year, they gave up...876 runs.

To be .500 or above, we need to allow 800 runs or less. A difference of 76 runs. (I know the Pythagorean record of scoring equal runs to allowing equal runs = .500 record, but the Jays Pythagorean record was several games over .500 yet they had a losing record.

So run prevention has to come from somewhere.

Guthrie needs to bounce back (under 4 ERA)
Bergesen needs to continue to pitch well (Under 4 ERA)
Matusz and Tillman need to not embarrass themselves 4.50 or better.
The winner of the 5th spot derby/vet
The Pen needs to be solid. Uehara goes back to the pen, JJ out of the closer's role and find closer (Mickolio? Hernandez?)

I'm cautiously optimistic for '10.

Oh, I don't mind signing a bat or arm in the offseason. But 2 variable I want to make sure we don't do. 1) Don't trade any of our young arms for said bat. I'd rather sign a FA. 2) Try to find a quality arm to help anchor the rotation if one of the kids falters. I think 2010 we'll be ahead of Toronto, and 2011 we can possible compete for a wild card. We may not get it, but 3rd place in 2011 is possible. 2012 may be our year if all of this young talent comes together. We'll have to replace BRob with a young guy in 2 years. Someone with leadoff speed and defense.

I wouldn't mind Bedard. I like Wigginton at 3rd until Bell is ready. Leave Scott at DH and let Aubrey or Snyder play 1st.

I remember two things about him:

We rocked him last year, and he pitched (as a starter) from the stretch.
