ES COVERAGE: 2007 TRAINING CAMP - DAY 2 - EVENING 07/28/07 Ok, here we go again. The morning thread is not even finished but I have to get started on the next round. It was good to hear that Blades was cramps only, and bad to hear that Ecker has a groin-pull that could be serious. We will have to wait and see. The fans are already out - lined up and ready to go. There is less Sun than this morning but the humidity has increased. There is a 60% chance for thundershowers later this evening but the radar looks good right now. Murf got detained at the house but I expect to see him shortly. I will be on monitoring. I will also take a walk up to the gate to see what's doing. Stand by... 6:45PM Update Back in from the fields on another great practice session. Bubba, at ease. Murf is still down taking care of some odds and ends. I will some audio up and then more audio, and then photos, and then write-ups, and then photos. That being said I think the offense enacted a little revenge on the defense tonight. Jason Campbell had his best practice of camp so far tonight, and it would have been better but for a few drops by Moss and others. Nonetheless there were a few big time plays that got the crowd fired up. Practice began as usual with stretching, special teams and then position drills. The fans saw more of this than last night. Some of the teams and position drills can be pretty exciting. There was a strip drill where a runner tries to run through two defenders who are doing their best to strip the ball. This drill can get physical and often defenders end up throwing the runner to the ground trying to strip the ball. I always like watching the QBs work out with the receivers. The QB will take the snap and throw to a receiver 10-30 yards down the field. This drill can bring some nice catches with guys coming right at you on the sideline. After some time it was on to 7-0n-7s, 9-on-9s, and 11-on-11s. Again, I think the offense took some revenge on the defense. I felt like we had the Brandon Lloyd show going a bit as he made two big catches. The play of the night was Campbell to Lloyd in the seam on a comeback route that he then turned on a sprinted to the end zone. It was a good 60-yard TD strike and got the crowd really going. Brandon then ran a go pattern down the sideline, catching a bomb (sorry, missed who threw it). Another good play was Todd Collins to Todd Yoder on a seam route for a huge gain. Mike sellers got in the act with a run off-tackle right that he converted for 30 yards. I asked mike about more carries this season and he stated that his roll should be larger this year in terms of carries and receptions. I focused on the line play a bit tonight. Phil Daniels ran one play during 9-on-9s that had him lined up at tackle. After the snap he stunted around Washington on the end and would have demolished Campbell had this been a game. Beyond this however, the offensive line held their own. Their were a few plays where pressure was on the pocket, and one play where the runner was stuffed for a loss, but not a lot of either. The offensive line did a magnificent job on the big gain by Sellers to open the hole up the middle. The secondary did a good, not great job. In some cases they had good coverage and broke up the pass. In others they had good coverage and the pass was caught. A few times however, like on the Lloyd comeback, the defender was no-where near the catch and then got juked trying to tackle the receiver. All in all I would say that both sides had their moments. Gibbs afterwards described the play as sloppy and said the team had a long way to go. For the record I love when this Gibbs shows up. When asked about Landry he said that he was expecting something “any minute.” Tomorrow is one of two fan appreciation days and I would recommend folks attend. I hear that Gibbs will probably address the fans sometime after 3:00PM. Ok gang, I am going to jam out of here. Murf is working on his write-up and I will post it later. Quotes of the Day “You alright? You got that?...You don’t even know what the hell I’m talking about do you?” – Danny Smith to Shaun Suisham after explaining situational kicking and reaction “You played in Dallas didn’t you? So did you. That’s why we block the field goal on Vanderjagt and win the game. Cause you don’t work on s*** in Dallas.” – Danny Smith to Shaun Suisham and Tyler Frederickson while explaining situational kicking and reaction Murf's Take Let me say right up front that tonight JimmiJo and I won’t be going into as much detail as usual. Unlike yesterday, or even this morning, there just wasn’t a ton going on to report. Sure, the team worked on a bunch of stuff, but not a lot stuck out or caught our eye. This new business-like mentality might be great for the team, but it’s not nearly as conducive to what we’re here to do. As soon as practice started, before the players even really got into stretching a group of female fans yelled “Happy birthday Chris!” while it was a sincere gesture form the ladies, Samuels had to know immediately that his teammates were going to razz the hell out of him for it. And they did. Portis, who was stretching next to the four-time Pro Bowler went into a mock female voice and echoed the “Happy birthday Chris” sentiment. Several other players made comments as well, so that was a nice start to practice. After special teams work each of the units worked on individual drills. The most entertaining action was going on front and center, where the wide receivers and defensive backs were lined up one-on-one. The first real moment the crowd got fired up took place when Santana Moss cut toward the sideline with Carlos Rogers all over him and made a perfect catch. It was just a simple 10-15 yard out pattern, but the way he ran it and the catch he made were worthy of the ovation. On the very next play Brandon Lloyd took off down the right sideline and caught the ball over his shoulder in stride for a huge gain on Fred Smoot. Those two plays showed that for the first time since training camp started the offense was ready to match the defense. During seven-on-seven drills the offense completed everything they attempted. Of course, they were working specifically on dump-offs to the running backs, so that was to be expected. I’ve mentioned a lot about the offense, but let me take a minute to mention a few defensive players who caught my attention this evening. Let me start with Andre Carter, who continues to get pressure in the backfield. It doesn’t matter who he lines up against, he’s using his speed to let Jason Campbell and friends know he’s there. If he plays this well when they go live it could really mean good things for the defensive line this year. For what it’s worth, Jamaal Green and Renaldo Wynn also did a nice job this evening of causing some trouble in the backfield during these drills. I wanna talk about Lemar Marshall for a second. Remember him? Well, I bet running back Marcus Mason does. That’s because Marshall absolutely leveled him when he caught a pass. To his credit Mason held onto the ball, but that’s about the best thing I can say for him on the play. Marshall just lined him up and hit him as soon as Mason jumped to grab the ball. Maybe seeing London Fletcher continually making plays rubbed off on the man they call ‘Catfish.’ Speaking of Fletcher, he showed a little personality today. Everyone knows the crowd comes out to see the offense during camp – that’s been readily apparent the last three years I’ve been out here. People just get more excited when Moss catches a long bomb or Portis jukes out a defender. Well, Fletcher pleaded out to the crowd after one of his many nice stops on the day “Don’t forget about the defense. Let’s hear it for the D too!” and to their credit, the sheep … I mean ... fans obliged him and made sure to cheer for Fletcher the next play. I mentioned Lloyd earlier, but I should give him some props again. He looked good both sessions today. In fact, he’s looked good all through training camp. So jot this down as the second year in a row he’s shined in camp with shorts on. It goes without saying that this town and this team will be a lot better off if he can continue to look this sharp once the full pads are on and the season starts. Alright, enough about Lloyd. It’s official: Mike Sellers is the 2007 mancrush for the Washington Redskins fanbase. Past honorees include (but are not limited to) Robert McCune and Jesse Lumsden. Every time he touches the ball people go nuts. Hey, at least he’s been a productive contributor for the team – unlike those other two names. And finally, I want to put some worried fans at ease on the subject of Jason Campbell. JimmiJo was a little critical of ‘The Franchise’ earlier today and I think it was the kick in the pants Campbell needed. Actually, the young QB doesn’t know JimmiJo exists, but that’s not important. What I think was really going on is that Jason was trying too hard to impress during the first two practices. It was causing him to overthrow some of the passes he typically doesn’t miss. Tonight he was much better all the way around and looked more like the guy who was perfect throughout minicamp. That’s all for me. Last edited by JimmiJo; July-28th-2007 at 09:37 PM.. |

I could see Blades being our MLB of the future. Glad to hear he just cramped up. IMO, he's a lot like London Fletcher; kind of undersized, and not the quickest guy on the field, but just a non-stop motor and nose for the ball. Truth be told, I wanted Paul Poszluzny, but I could see H.B. being a steal of a 4th round pick.
Thanks for the outstanding coverage. You guys are always tops, but you're really outdoing yourselves this year. Keep it up. ![]()

definitely would like to hear how the how DLine rotation is going, backups etc.... How are the DB's looking, backups included? How about Marshall is he being pulled in for more of a LB rotation as well? think he could really help keep them fresh, rocky starting at WLB and LM coming in to freshen guys up when needed... how's Wade doing? what about the other back up tight ends, looking any good...
Thanks as always - you guys are the best, really appreciate all the work you do, couldn't make it through without being able to see this on ES HAIL!! |

We aimed for Doughty because of the requests on here, as well as the Witticker and Wade interviews today. I'll see if we can't try to tackle Montgomery, Golston and Macklin either this evening or tomorrow. Keep the suggestions coming guys.

How about a Pete Schmitt interview, i'm begining to develop a man crush on him and would enjoy an interview. For those who don't know about him he's #40 hes been in a ton of pics and looks to be the backup for Mike Sellers this year. I would also appreciate a Montgomery and Golston interview. And i think everyone can agree that a Fred Smoot interview would be more then welcome ![]() |

Can you ask CP if he'd run through a brick wall for Joe Gibbs if he could win the Super Bowl?
