Snyder To Make 980 His Sports Talk Flagship, Adios Riggo - 7/16 - The DC Post reports that Redskins owner Dan Snyder plans to run one sports talker among his batch of DC area stations, using newly-acquired WTEM, 980 AM, as his flagship. WTEM's programs will be carried on four of the six stations that Snyder's Red Zebra broadcasting arm controls. Including the three signals of Snyder's current Triple X sports talker - 92.7 and 94.3 FM and 730 AM. Also, the Post reports that Red Zebra will drop the John Riggins show, which had aired on the three Triple X outlets. Plus, Red Zebra will move ESPN's nationally-syndicated radio shows from Triple X to the WTEM quadcast. Including "Mike And Mike," which will bump WTEM's current syndicated morning program, "The First Team." Colin Cowherd will displace a syndicated midday program hosted by former ESPN personality Dan Patrick. The changes will leave WTEM's three local call-in shows intact, with former Redskin Rick "Doc" Walker airing in mid-morning, former Georgetown basketball coach John Thompson hosting in mid-afternoon, and "The Sports Reporters," with Andy Pollin and Steve Czaban, carried during late-afternoon drive. The Post adds that Red Zebra has made no decision about changing the political talk formats of its newly-acquired WTNT, 570 AM, and WWRC, 1260 AM. Plans are for all six Red Zebra stations to carry Redskins game broadcasts simultaneously..... Actually surprised that Riggins is canned and not the sports reporters. I am thinking that they bring in Riggins for something and maybe a partnership with Czabe and Pollin. Maybe Czabe and Pollin have large buyouts in their contracts or what not. Thoughts? |

Czabe's skull has to be about an inch thick. Just guessing.

I am surprised at the Riggins Move. I really thought they would have done something like Putting Doc and Riggo back to back or something

To me, Riggins is better suited as a second guy in the booth. He needs a more prominent straight man to carry the show, with Riggins riffing off of him, instead of Riggins trying to keep things flowing himself.

Didnt I hear somewhere that Redskins lunch was cancelled aswell (the show that used to have Bram)?
I enjoyed 'ol Riggo, aswell as Bram & Larry. I may be alone on this one, but I also enjoy the opinionated Cowherd during my ride to work. |

Seconded. I was ready to post something similar to this post. Thanks, Dan, for doing the work for me. ![]() Its the end of Riggins show.. not the end of Riggins.

I know what about Larry Micheals and John Riggins on Redskins Nation. I hate that one girl on there. She has no charcter to her. She seems like a robot to me.

Czabe, despite the bitching and moaning about him on this board, is ALMOST untouchable. He is, whether fortunately or unfortunately, pretty much the face of local sports talk radio in this area (and what a freakin' face it is
). If, and that's a big IF, they decided to can him, that would open up the opportunity for a rival station to legitimately compete with Danny's station almost immediately. That being said, I'm not too familiar with the specifics on how Czabe's contract works with Fox Sports Radio vs Sports Talk 980. I do, however, think you'll see Czabe's opinions watered down from this point forward.
