SARASOTA, Fla. -- The Orioles' left-handed pitcher Eric DuBose has been arrested in Sarasota County, Fla., on a charge of driving under the influence.

Sarasota's WWSB-TV reported that DuBose was arrested yesterday by county sheriff's deputies after he was pulled over in the 5800 block of Midnight Pass Road.

DuBose, who is fighting for the fifth spot in the starting rotation, had been in Sarasota yesterday to pitch a minor league game during what was a day off for most of his teammates.

DuBose was released last night on $500 bond.

The sad thing is that you can't enter Canada if you commit a felony in the US for a certain period of time. What would they do with him in toronto? Furthermore, the O's AAA franchise, which he'd be starting the year anyway, is in Ottawa!

I guess he's looking for a way to get out of it since he knows he isn't making the big league club. However, I doubt he'll be convicted. Either way, he should be working on his pitching instead of getting DUI's. I guess at least it wasn't a DWI...lol.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Orioles pitcher Eric DuBose was arrested and charged with driving under the influence early Monday morning in Sarasota, Fla., before making a start later that day at the team's minor league complex. He was released on $500 bond.

DuBose, 28, was arrested at 1:17 a.m. after an officer on foot patrol observed the pitcher's black GMC truck swerving into an oncoming lane, according to the Sarasota County police report. DuBose also came close to rear-ending another vehicle, the report said.

Deputy T.W. Shirley contacted another officer, who pulled over DuBose's vehicle. Shirley identified DuBose as the driver.

According to the report, Deputy David Clark Jr. saw DuBose's truck swerve across the yellow line three times. Clark noted that DuBose's speech was slurred, and the pitcher exhibited poor balance, had watery and blood-shot eyes and an "odor of alcoholic beverage."

The report states DuBose informed Clark he had "a couple" drinks at the Cafe Gardens and Daiquiri Deck in Sarasota. When instructed to recite the alphabet, DuBose allegedly said, "I'm from Alabama, and they have a different alphabet."

DuBose's alcohol level registered at .113 more than an hour after being stopped. The legal limit in Florida is .08.

DuBose was booked at 1:47 a.m. and released at 10:28 a.m. He pitched six innings later that afternoon against a collection of minor league players while the Orioles had the day off.

DuBose must appear in court on April 13 for his arraignment while the Orioles are in the middle of a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in St. Petersburg, Fla.

He arrived at Fort Lauderdale Stadium yesterday morning, but had permission to skip the workout and exhibition game against the Devil Rays because he pitched on Monday. DuBose wasn't available to comment on the arrest, and the team didn't issue a statement.

"From our standpoint, it's a personal matter and we're not going to comment," club spokesman Bill Stetka said.

DuBose's agent, James McGinnis, didn't return calls to The Sun.

Trying to make the team as a fifth starter or left-hander in the bullpen, DuBose is 1-0 with a 5.63 ERA this spring. He began last season in the rotation but underwent surgery on July 1 to remove bone chips and spurs from his left elbow.

If the Orioles want to send DuBose to the minors, they might have trouble getting him to Triple-A Ottawa because of the arrest, which would delay his ability to obtain a work visa in Canada. The team faced a similar problem with John Parrish, who also had a DUI on his record, and he began the 2003 season at Double-A Bowie.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., March 23 -- Baltimore Orioles pitcher Eric DuBose made a public apology this morning for his arrest Monday on driving under the influence charges, saying he was sorry he embarrassed the team.

DuBose was charged after he was stopped after driving erratically early Monday morning. DuBose admitted having three drinks and had slurred speech, watery eyes and smelled of alcohol, according to the arrest report from the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office. A breath-test reading measured .113, above the legal limit of .08 in Florida.

"I regret the situation I put myself in, and my family and friends," DuBose said early this morning before the team bus left for Fort Myers for the Orioles' game against the Boston Red Sox. "It's embarrassing for the ballclub."

Asked whether he had been disciplined by the Orioles, DuBose, 28, said he had been ordered to take "some actions with the ballclub." He declined to elaborate. Orioles Manager Lee Mazzilli said DuBose's punishment and the question of whether the arrest could affect his future with the ballclub were "internal matters." DuBose has been fighting for the fifth starter's spot. He has a 5.63 earned run average in three games, with one start.

DuBose is scheduled to appear in Sarasota court April 13, which is convenient, as the Orioles play in Tampa Bay, just north of Sarasota, that day.

"I hope it doesn't" affect my future, Dubose said. "You gotta be able to separate your personal life from your professional life."

Why is it when people are arrested for drunken driving, they always say they only had a couple drinks? DuBose said he had 3, but come on, you don't blow a .11 on 3 drinks, unless you had five or six or they were hella strong.
